For the Love of Fashion
It is not infrequent for people to exclaim in my direction ‘How can you need more clothes?? You buy almost an entire outfit a week, surely you have built up enough of a collection to last you for years?’. And I do kind of see their point. If you could collect all the clothes I have bought in the last year alone… well, I shudder to think just how much that would be. I freely admit that it is a waste, and I should be ashamed of myself.
But I’m really not. I love clothes, but more then that I love fashion. Sure, I could be one of those girls that just wears jeans and t-shirts year in, year out. Some kind of t-shirt and jeans are usually in fashion at all times. But for me, I can’t see the fun in wearing straight cut jeans when skinny jeans are so much more fashionable and thus more attractive?
The fashion changes seasonally, and with it my taste in clothes. I don’t feel good in last years fashion, and if I don’t feel good I don’t feel happy. I like being happy.
Of course you can argue the point that does fashion equal attractiveness and does attractiveness equal happiness. You only have to look at images such as this….
That is fall fashion 2009. I wouldn’t want to look like that, I hate animal print for one and I would never wear such a ridiculous looking hat. The jumper dress on the otherhand? Now that makes me look awesome. I wouldn’t have known that if it weren’t in the current fashion. And to be honest it probably won’t make me look nearly as good this time next year. Fashion just isn’t lasting. There are certain fashions that go round in circles, popping back up every few years but it is very rare to have fashion that lasts from one year to the next. And even if they do, they are worn or accessorized differently.Which brings us back to the point, why not just dress how you want, surely if you dress the way you are then you will be attractive anyway. But this is how I want to dress. I can barely describe the experience of being in a shop looking at their most recent collection and imagining myself in all those different clothes. I love the smell of new clothes, the way they feel, the way they look when they have never been washed. One of the few times that I feel truly at peace is standing in a clothes shop, listening to whatever music they have playing, and dreaming of being able to afford the entire collection. You can argue that I will look like a clone, that I will not stand out in any crowd. But you would be wrong. I may buy a new wardrobe each season according to the fashion, but it is me that puts the outfits together. It is me that chooses specific items of clothing and accessories to fit my personality. And it is me that wears them. I don’t walk like anyone else, I don’t talk like anyone else, I don’t smile like anyone else and I certainly don’t think like anyone else. I make whatever I wear attractive by being the one wearing them, by feeling attractive. And I feel attractive by regularly having new clothes. If you don’t, that’s up to you, I am sure you look and feel great in whatever you do choose to wear. That is the beauty of being us.

Cough*materialistic*cough
I kid. Fashion is very important, and I say whatever makes you happy is what you should wear. Unfortunately I’m happy in my jeans and a t-shirt, or even worse an oversized sweatshirt and PJ pants. I still try to stay somewhat fashionable, though I must admit, I’m not very good at it!
@thegirlwiththecamera - I really am materialistic. Its so sad. But it makes me happy so it cant be that sad. I am also very unmaterialistic in some ways too so I am sure it all balances out.
I get the whole “you don’t need anymore clothes” thing too, but I always say you can never have enough clothes or shoes or jewelry or whatever it is. I love fashion, but I don’t keep up with it too much. There’s a lot about trends and fashion that I don’t like so I normally just wear whatever I want or feel like at the moment. Sometimes I’ll even buy something and then do my own modifications to it.
By the way I LOVE animal print.
@SimplyNita - I have never been able to love animal prints even when they are in fashion. Particularly of the leapordish variety… could just be because I don’t like the colour.
You and clothes = me and shoes. It’s ridiculous but I love it.
@AnamcharaConcepts - I have never got the whole shoe thing. I want to love buying shoes, I mean what is the point in having a killer outfit if you don’t have the shoes to go with it? You can’t wear it out for anyone to see. But I just hate finding shoes. I have varying styles of shoes mainly in black since that goes with most things.
@happyworld_ofharibo - OMG, we need to get you into the shoes. They can totally change an outfit. The colors! The materials and styles… Heel heights and shapes. Now tell me you have a great top and skinny jeans. Accessorized to the hilt. Wouldn’t a pair of hot red killer little heeled shoes finish it off? Dang now I want to go looking again.
i wish i lived in england, then i’d sooo be raiding your closet to borrow all your “last season” clothes. any chance you want to ship stuff to canada for me? *L0L*
Oooh some of the things in fashion shows are absolutely ridiculous! A lot of the time I think runway shows are just there so that designers can showoff their ability to make completely insane things. A lot of the things you see in those shows absolutely can not be worn normally. They just looks so crazy!
But back to personal fashion, my family never really had a lot of money. I mean, we weren’t poor, weren’t in debt, my parents paid all their bills and saved for retirement and made sure we were taken care of. We were comfortable. But we didn’t have a lot to spend on frivolous things. Regular priced clothing can be quite expensive. I’ve always had a hard time finding even part-time jobs. So I never had the latest fashions. I would get them a year later from second hand shops. And I still do because we don’t have much money right now. *grumbles about not getting any shifts at the new job* Also, I’m one of those people who lives in jeans and t-shirts a lot. I try to find cute shirts and spend a little more on them so I’m not completely out of style, but I always buy regular jeans because they are cheapest and and are never exactly out of fashion, you know?
I know what you mean about going to shops and wishing to be able to afford the whole collection. Heck, I go into shops and wish I could afford just a couple pieces of the collection. Thats how empty my bank account is. I thought things would change when I finished school and got a job and would be able to spend my money on nice clothes for a change. Damn you economy!
P.S. I also am not a huge fan of shoe shopping. I’m not a huge fan of “fashionable” shoes in general. I hate heels and am more a cute flats and comfrotable trainers type girl.
yeah thats just it. most of that stuff that is worn by models down the runway looks retarted. like way over the edge. who would wanna wear that stuff. there is nothing wrong with going to walmart and getting all sexed up with some $12 dollar clothing line. Hey give me a girl in a t-shirt and blue jeans!
i love shopping when i have money to burn……problem #1 i never have money to burn…. but enjoy your shopping darling…and yes trends do come back around i used to sew my jeans legs tight when i was a teenager, cause they didn’t make ones tight enough for my skinny legs!!!! …i just hope the 80′s big hair never returns.
@the_fur_pimp - Lol, I’m afraid I never just wear a t-shirt and blue jeans. I may wear something akin to that but it will always look fashionable. It is so much fun.
@the_fur_pimp - Oh and I also would never wear clothes from walmart or a similar english shop, I am way too much of a snob.
Fashion is life to be now warm fashion soon, lol.
